Ladies and Gentlemen, your attention please!
We gather here tonight to celebrate our hard-earned freedom, though we are not unaware of the dangers that still threaten us. Yes, celebrate our present liberty, but be vigilant against those who are striving to take it away.
I entreat you, when is the time to exert ourselves in the cause of liberty if not this? Following the infamous massacre in the town of Boston, just a short while ago during the winter of 1775, the patriot Joseph Warren spoke these fitting words:
“Our country is in danger, butnot to be despaired of. Our enemies are numerous and powerful; but we have many friends, determining to be free, and heaven and earth will aid the resolution. On you depend the fortunes of America. You are to decide the important question, on which rest the happiness and liberty of millions yet unborn. Act worthy of yourselves.”
And now ladies and gentlemen, a toast: to patriots, past and present!
